Protests Against Environment Pollution - Violence Erupts in Udyavar

News Courtesy: The Hindu

21 Feb 2010, Udupi: The laying of pipelines from some fishmeal companies to the Arabian Sea led to violence at Udyavar village near Udupi on Saturday. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been clamped in the village till 6 a.m. on Monday.

Udupi Tahsildar V. Prasanna told The Hindu that rivalry between two groups on laying the pipelines to the sea from three fishmeal companies led to the violence. The district administration had given permission to lay the pipeline to the sea and, accordingly, work started around 10.30 a.m. on Saturday. The situation became tense around 3.30 p.m. and work was stopped.

The administration decided to pursue the issue on Monday.

Mr. Prasanna said that a group of people from Padukere and Udyavar were opposed to these fishmeal companies. Their demands were that the wastewater from trucks carrying the fish should be stopped and the effluents should be treated before they were discharged into the sea.

He said some people assaulted Mohan Salian in the afternoon as he was opposing the fishmeal companies. This infuriated the people, who began burning tyres and throwing stones at buildings in protest. Hence Section 144 was imposed on the village from 5 p.m. on Saturday, Mr. Prasanna said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jayant Shetty said that a police jeep and a car were damaged in stone throwing. The police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Shops downed shutters in the village, he said.

He said that the police arrested four persons. A platoon of the KSRP and two of District Armed Reserve had been pressed into service. “The situation is under control,” he said.

President Speaks

Dear all,

Since a week past after the picnic and we had our Udyavarites Committee Meeting this week end, as it has become customary to review every event, evaluate it and it's success based on actions and participation of people. We Udyavarites committee, thank you all attendees, our well wishers, guests and all who supported this event for its success.  We have sincerely missed our fellow Udyavarites who could not attend this event due to their own priorities. Many thanks to Lancy Martis for his photography and Mrs. Jennifer Suares for a detailed crisp report on this event.

As this is the decennial year of Udyavarites, on this occasion we will be presenting a hilarious drama of Francis Fernandes Casia  ‘Matharo Chorbella’ back home in Udyavar. This drama’s 50th show will be staged in our Church compound on 18th April 2010 with the support of ICYM Udyavar.  All are cordially invited.

We are thankful for the support rendered by our fellow Udyavarites scattered in our parts of Gulf and all over the world.

Udyavarites Annual Picnic Turns Memorable

Report by : Jenifer Pinto Suares

Pictures by : Lancy Martis

The much awaited Udyavarites Annual Picnic was held on 12th February 2010 at Zabeel Park – Gate 3. A very cozy and nice corner was spotted by the early birds among the Udyavarites that served as a good spot for elders and kids alike. All gathered at 12 noon and the fun and frolic kick started.

Over a 120 members comprising Udyavarites, their family and friends filled the area with buzz and chirps. ‘Bajil’ (special Mangalorean breakfast) made by Cecelia D’sa along with freshly squeezed lime juice exclusively mastered by Gilbert D’sa constituted the breakfast of the day with people left asking for more.

The gathering was welcomed by Robert Fernandes as he set the ball rolling and called upon Veena D’Silva to lead everyone in prayer. All gathered were then divided into groups of four viz. All Idiots, Thotte, Pataki and Burj Khalifa. The group performance along with Konkani songs and dance acted as an apt icebreaker for amongst the team members and a perfect introduction to the rest of the teams. All of them seemed geared up right from the beginning and the team spirit of the members remained unabated till the end.

The groups games like passing the football, General Knowledge / Current Affairs quiz Competitions, Listing of maximum Mangalorean sir names, Eating Chocolates, Dumb Charades and 15 minute Radio performance (Aakashwani) which included humourous news, an interview, radio jingles and a song kept the groups well knit and the team spirit alive and kicking. The tiny tots actively participated in the game of passing of the ball as well as the team games. This kept the teams entertained and on their toes for all activities. The games and competitions were well steered by Jenifer Pinto Suares, Cecelia D’Sa and Robert Fernandes while they were justly judged by Joe Pinto and Shine Pereira.

During the lunch break, sumptuous food became the talk of the afternoon. Mangalorean traditional food which constituted Dal, Channa Sukka, Chicken Sukka, Boiled Rice, Pappad and Pickle left all smacking their fingers and asking for more.

The games concluded with hitting the matka well arranged by Gerald Pereira and housie – housie by Jocky D’Souza. The winners were announced and were presented by their respective prizes. The winners were ‘All Idiots’ followed by ‘Thotte’ and pursuing close heels were ‘Burj Khalifa’ and ‘Patakhi’. President Vivian D’Silva thanked everyone who strived for the success of the event.
