Chembukall Rock

For the young students of "Hindu Primary School" and "St. Francis Xavier's School" this rock is nothing less than "Mount Everest". This rock has silently seen thousands of students playing in its vicinities since years. Many of us must have grown watching this rocky hill almost everyday during our school days.

"Chembukal Rock" (ಚೆಂಬುಕಲ್ or ಶಂಬುಕಲ್ as locally called) is an important landscape in Udyavar. There is a temple on the top of the rock and a "Nandi" idol (ನಂಧಿ ವಿಗ್ರಹ) aside. There is a pond on the rear side of this rock.

Elders sitting and relaxing, enjoying the evening breeze while children play in the playing area is a regular scene for the people who pass-by this rocky hill.

  2. On seeing photograph of ChembuKallu rock, I am reminded of a childhood incident still afresh in my mind. During those days I was studying in St. Francis Church School, may be 35 years ago. One day one of the teachers in school asked a student if he has done the home work and the student a classmate of mine, who came without doing the home work started running out of class in fear of this particular teacher’s beatings & punishments. He ran out before rest of us could realize he was at the base of so called our 'Mount Everest' which was slippery as it was monsoon.

So the teacher instructed us to catch and bring him back but none of the students were ready as it was precarious tedious job but one of our fellow student who was adventurous and bold, started chasing this student. As he was chasing, we could hear him saying "lovvu dhavmre.., havm dharina tuka.. " (run slowly.. I won't catch you..) and both ran and disappeared and we all, rest of us waited till SAJJIGE time for both to return disappointed as both didn't turn up.

When asked the second day, the so called police who chased, also wanted to run out of the class because he too had not done his 'mane kelasa (home work)'.
